Rev. Archie Cummings, Jr.
an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church; formal serves as the
Pastor of the St. Mark A. M. E. Church Family in East Orange, New Jersey. Following
his ordination; he was assigned as the Pastoral Shepherd of Emanuel A. M. E. Church,
Montclair, NJ (3), Bethany A. M. E. Church, Yonkers, NY (9), and Union A. M. E.
Church, Allentown, NJ (9). Dedicated and committed to a life of serving others,
he is active in religious, civic and educational organizations in the East Orange,
New Jersey community.
Instilled from an early age with an inquisitive
mind, and a keen interest in science and biology, a love of learning and a secret
promise to improve a siblings health; he began the pursuit of service to others
in the field of scientific and medical laboratory research. For more than ten years,
he worked as a medical technologist in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and
microbiology clinical laboratories. While working as a laboratory supervisor, he
established and organized procedures to screen pediatric patients for the sickle
cell anemia trait during initial admittance testing.
Rev. Cummings continued to improve his
skills, and pursue his interests in many areas of scientific and medical research;
by transferring to the teaching environment of New York University Medical Center’s
Biochemistry Department and later its Pathology Department, with a primary focus
in DNA Repair and Protein Purification, where he worked for 35 years, refining his
craft and teaching students working towards their Master and Doctoral degrees.
Rev. Cummings has co-authored several
scientific articles published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemical
and Biophysical Research Communications, American Chemistry Society and the Free
Radical Research Communications, all relating to advancements in the DNA Repair
and Protein Purification fields.
Rev. Cummings received his certification
as a Registered Medical Technologist from the Lyons Institute of Medical Technology
in Newark, New Jersey, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from New York
University. He also completed an advanced course of study in biology and chemistry.
Enrolling in a theological course study program at New York Theological Seminary,
he successfully completed a required two year course of study, to receive his certification
in Pastoral Care.
Since his first assignment, Rev. Cummings
has continued to be involved and active in religious and community projects and
programs. He has received a variety of plaques and citations commending him for
his dedication and commitment. As the shepherd with a ‘Pastor’s Heart’, he strives
to promote peace, harmony and a sense of caring within the church family and throughout
the community. He remains deeply committed to one of his special passions; children,
and served as a Pastoral Support Group Advisor to the Allentown School District.
He serves as the Finance Chairperson of the Newark District Fellowship, and Treasurer
of the NJ Conference Ministers’ Fellowship.
Archie Jr. and his wife; Annie are the
proud and loving parents of one son; the late Kevin Cummings, one daughter; Leticia
(Anthony) Mayo, one very special granddaughter; Jazmyn and grandson (Elijah).
