Rev. Vernon H. Peters
Rev. Vernon H. Peters

Rev. Vernon H. Peters was appointed to the Pastoralship of Heard A.M.E. Church by the Presiding Bishop, Richard F. Norris in June 2009.

Before he became the pastor of Heard AME he was the proud pastor of Union A.M.E. Church in Warwick N.Y. He was assigned there in April 29, 2007.

Before his appointment to pastor at Union A.M.E. Church, Rev. Peters served as an associate minister of Allen Memorial, where the
Rev. Benjamin Singleton Jr. is the Senior Pastor. Upon acceptance of his calling to preach, Rev. Peters has been a willing servant of Christ who was determined to fulfilling his purpose in life. His passion is bringing the world alive through his ministering and preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Reverend Vernon H. Peters obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Lehman College, and a Master of Arts in Divinity from Stanford University. He is currently matriculated at Drew Theological Seminary, in the Doctor of Ministry program.

When it comes to teaching: He provides training at H.S.B.C. Bank for high school students applying for jobs in the public and private sector. Classes on etiquette, how to dress for success and what is expected of you by your employer, with the co-sponsorship of H.S.B.C. Bank, New York City Urban League and other affiliates. (He is also a lifetime member of the New York Urban League).

As for ministering, Rev. Peters served the body of Christ in the following capacities:

Director of youth ministry at Allen Memorial A.M.E. Church and Local Y.P.D. Director of the Hattie Backus Missionary Society of Allen Memorial Church. Before becoming the youth minister, Rev. Peters worked with the local Y.P.D. at Allen, enabling their membership to expand from a few members to 40 strong. Under his leadership, Allen’s Y.P.Ders also traveled to various countries and states attending different meetings (whether held by the conference branch or connectional Y.P.D.), and encouraged each youth to become greater participants in the worship service as well as church community.

Also, Rev. Peters has a Family Ministry where he counseled and mentored newly wed couples.

Currently, Rev. Peters is employed at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he is a Manager in the Department of Nursing, and is responsible for the development of programs and training of all nursing personnel.

Most importantly, Rev. Peters is a man of God with a vision and is motivated by God to continue building God’s kingdom and bringing more souls to Christ at Union A.M.E. Church. For not only is he a dynamic preacher, but also a devoted family man who is the loving father of Brittni Peters and dedicated husband of Cheryl Browne-Peters.

Knowing that he can do “all things through Christ who strengthens him”, Rev. Peters has a passion to serve and a vision instilled by God, which will be fulfilled during his tenor as Pastor, and encourages the Union A.M.E. church family with the following words: “We must remember that although life may at times seem helpless and hopeless, there is hope for us in Jesus Christ. Light a candle. It is a simple act of faith that reaffirms that Jesus is the light of the world who casts outs darkness and hopelessness. Give thanks for the light” – John 8:12
